Jim Dermody was born and raised in Seattle, WA. He retired as a Captain from the Seattle Police Department (SPD) with thirty-one years of service. He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Washington. During his tenure with SPD, he worked in all of its Bureaus to include Patrol, plain clothes Anti-Crime Team, SWAT, Patrol Watch Commander, Homicide Commander, and a Captain for eleven years overseeing the following: East Precinct, West Precinct, Narcotics, Data-Driven Policing & Criminal Intelligence, Force Investigations, Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence/Child Abuse, Collaborative Policing, Criminal Intelligence/RTCC, and the Seattle Police Operations Center. He is a past member of the Operations Committee for WA-OneNet, the FirstNet effort in Washington state, was former president of the Seattle Police Relief Association, a 501c9 VEBA, and is the current Board of Trustees Chairman of the Seattle Police Foundation. He has presented at the International Association of Chiefs of Police on several topics to include: hotspots policing, policing vulnerable populations, community partnerships & crime prevention, and public recording of the police. He has commanded large events to include the 2013-14 NFC Championship game, Seafair Torchlight Parade, presidential and dignitary visits (including C.A.T. for a sitting VPOTUS), large free speech protests and special events, and was on the on-scene commander for the Jewish Federation active shooter incident. He is currently the Director of Security for Climate Pledge Arena, the $1.2B project that is home to the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, WNBA’s Seattle Storm, PWHL’s Seattle Torrent, and approximately eighty concerts and family events per year.
